Fenugreek has been used, medicinally, since medieval times. Fenugreek is used to soothe digestive problems, Hair tonic, induce lactation in females , stimulate milk production in nursing mothers, Helps to maintain healthy blood sugar level, blood pressure level, blood cholesterol, ease bronchitis , sore throats, heal and reduce inflammations in wounds.
Action and uses as per Ayurveda: Fenugreek is used for upper respiratory inflammation and, applied externally, for boils, ulcers, hives, and eczema. Fenugreek helps in prevention of atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease. In Asian medicine, it is considered a treatment for anorexia, beriberi, bronchitis, fever, hernia, impotence, and vomiting. It contains diosgenin, a compound used as a starting material for sex hormones as an aphrodisiac. . It helps in constipation, sore throats, tuberculosis and bronchitis. It is a powerful expectorant and breaks up respiratory congestions. Fenugreek's medicinal benefits lie in the ripe, dried seeds. The seed is a carminative (taken to relieve flatulence).
Fenugreek contains high concentrations of choline, tryptophan, ascorbic acid, niacin and potassium. Choline is useful for athletic work , tryptophan is a serotonin precursor, ascorbic acid works as antioxidant, and niacin and potassium are useful for immune system.
Note: Fenugreek selectively reduces the LDL and VLDL fractions of total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol and high-triglyceride levels.
The presence of 4-hydroxyisoleucine may be useful in part for fenugreeks effectiveness in type II diabetic treatment.
