Due to imbalance in any of the above said doshas (Humours), in the interstitial spaces–(Spaces between the skin and the tissues), there is accumulation of fluid/water, abnormal swelling or puffiness. This swelling or inflammation or water retention is known as edema or dropsy. This fluid/water accumulation and swelling of the tissues requires removal of toxins from the body.
