Respiration

Respiration is the expulsion of carbon dioxide from the body and inhaling of oxygen in the body. It is the respiratory system which sustains our life. In Ayurveda, respiratory disorders are considered to be derangement of Pranavahastrotas (Air Passages). The imbalance of five kinds of biological energies–Prana Vayu (Vital Air and Oxygen), Vyan Vayu (Energy which regulates the circulation of blood in the body), Udan Vayu (Energy present in the umbilical region, chest and the neck), Saman Vayu (Energy present in the stomach and duodenum) and Apana Vayu (Energy which governs the downward action in the body) – cause the problems. In Ayurveda, the problems of respiratory system are known as "Kasa Roga". Ayurveda considers that the respiratory system is influenced by state of mind, the quality of metabolism and excretory functions. Thus mental tensions may cause respiratory diseases like Asthma because "Pranavayu (Vital Air and Oxygen )" gets disturbed. Ayurveda emphasises on building up the strong immune system. Ayurveda mentions respiratory system as Pranavaha Shrotas. Here, Prana is vital energy (Life-energy) and Shrotas means channels through which this vital energy flows. According to the Ayurveda, the exposure to the dust, smoke, wind and cold are important causative factors for respiratory discomfort.

Excessive accumulation of Ama is the most important causative factor that disturbs the respiratory health. Ama is a sticky foul smelling toxic material which is produced as a result of weak digestive Fire (Agni). Then, Ama enters into Pranavaha Shrotas or respiratory passage and gets mixed with Shleshka Kapha and vitiates it resulting in excessive production of phlegm which obstructs the passage.

I first used this product when I had a bad case of bronchitis. I used Respiton during my convalescence and it helped greatly. Recently, I got a bad chest cold and started taking Respiton again in order to avoid further complications. It's something I plan on keeping around now, just in case.
