Ayurvedic Concept
Insomnia, known as "Nidranash" in Ayurvedic ancient literature. The main biological factors involved in the pathogenesis of insomnia are Vata (Air) and Pitta (Fire). If there is increase in Vata (Air) than Pitta (Fire), the ultimate effect will be complete loss of sleep. If Pitta (Fire) is increased, then there is decrease in the quantity and quality of sleep. The effects of both these conditions are weakness in the body, impotency & decrease in the quality of life.
Insomnia
Insomnia is a condition of inadequate quantity or quality of sleep. Difficulty falling asleep is the commonest complaint, followed by difficulty in staying asleep and early weakening. Insomnia may be a symptom of a depressive illness, anxiety disorder or other psychiatric conditions. More commonly it arises at a time of increased stress, some people then become preoccupied with lack of sleep and fear trying to get to sleep. This establishes a vicious circle which perpetuates the problem.
Parasomnia
The two most important is sleep walking and night terrors, both of which occur during slow wave - sleep. During sleep walking vision and coordination remain intact but serious accidents can occur. It is important that these persons sleep in a protected environment so that it is impossible for them to fall from windows or down stairs.
Night terrors start with a frightening scream which is associated with sweating, increased heart and respiratory rates and a scared expression. The person is usually unable to recall the episodes (Unlike nightmares). It is claimed parasomnias resolve with improved sleep hygiene, particularly reduced consumption of alcohol and caffeine.
