Description
Large quantities of the mucilage (A gelatinous substance) having a jelly-like consistency, which is contained in the superficial, layers of the seed, is acted on by the digestive enzymes to a very slight extent. It passes through the small intestine unchanged and during its passage it lines the mucous membrane acting as a demulcent and a lubricant. The mucilage forms a coating over the surface of the ulcers, there by protecting the injured mucous from the irritating products of gastro-intestinal digestion, but would also prevent access of the motile bacteria which would be entangled in the meshes of the gel. Its colloidal nature has a remarkable power of absorbing bacterial and other toxins. It acts the same way as liquid paraffin does so far as its lubricant and constipation-relieving effects are concerned. The decoction and mucilage-containing cover separated from the seeds is however preferable in sub acute types of dysentery are both of protozoa and bacillary origin.
Ayurvedic Concept
Due to digestive impairment food remains indigestive and it produces dyspepsia.
Due to indigestive food the following problems according to Ayurveda may arise.
Amajirana due to high Kapha (water), Vidaghdha jirana due to high Pitta (Fire) and vistbdha jirana due to high Vata (Air).
Vistbdhajirana (High Vata (Air)): In this condition feacoleath retained in the intestine and disturb intestinal movements. A symptom are ache, flatulence with gurgling sound and aches, doesn't pass feces and flatus, which creates numbness and pain in limbs.
Vidaghdha jirana (High Pitta (Fire)): Indigestive impairments produces flatulence and disturb metabolism. Symptoms are Vertigo, Thirst, Syncope and other Pitta (Fire) vitiated problems like hyper-acidic hiccough, sweating and burning sensation.
Amajirana (High kapha (water)): Dyspepsia due to indigestion disturbs the metabolism and it produces Amajirana (Dyspepsia). Symptoms are Heaviness in body, Nausea, swelling in throat region and below eye lid, hiccough of the food (which we have consumed) and indigestion.

Research shows the presence of essential oils in basil. Scientific studies have established that compounds in basil oil have potent Antioxidant, Anti-Cancer, Antiviral, and Anti-Microbial properties. Also, basil has been shown to decrease the occurrence of platelet aggregation. It assists digestion with its tannins and mineral salts and, in addition to its stimulation of lactation, it seems that basil is also a good sedative . Basil, most commonly used in leaf form, is a well-known herb used in a variety of dishes, and particularly in Italian foods, and is also known to help promote proper digestion and reduce gas. In addition to aiding in digestion, basil is often used as a mild antimicrobial. Researchers found that basil is a rich source of Antioxidants (Which fight those nasty free radicals) and, in addition, basil helps ease gas and stomach cramps. It is traditionally used for supplementary treatment of stress Asthma and diabetes in India. In Siddha medicine, it is used for treating pimples on the face, but intake of the seeds in large quantities is harmful for the brain.. The silica and saponins found in the plant have a positive effect on urinary problems and bloating . |
More about Basil
According to the study conducted Basil contains a compound called eugenol, which eliminates spasm. Make basil tea by pouring 1/2 cup of boiling water over 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried basil. Let it steep and strain before drinking.
According to Mildred Mattfeldt-Beman, PhD, RD, LD of the St. Louis University in Missouri. Basil contains anti-microbial properties which protect digestive tract against germs present in the tract.
Isapghul (Plantago Ispagula)

Isapghul (Plantago Ispagula) Seed syllium is a bulk-forming laxative and is high in both fiber and mucilage. Psyllium seeds contain 10-30% mucilage. The laxative properties of psyllium are due to the swelling of the husk when it comes in contact with water. This forms a gelatinous mass and keeps the feces hydrated and soft. The resulting bulk stimulates a reflex contraction of the walls of the bowel, followed by emptying. May be helpful for Demulcent, Emollient, Laxative, Diuretic problems. |
Indications and how Psyllium helps
Constipation: Psyllium has long been used as a chief ingredient in "bulk laxatives". Generally, an increase in stool weight, an increase in bowel movements per day, and a decrease in total gut transit time has been observed in most studies.
Diarrhea: Psyllium has been studied for the treatment of diarrhea, particularly in patients undergoing tube feeding. It has also been studied in addition to orlistat therapy in hopes of decreasing gastrointestinal effects (Diarrhea and oily discharge) of this weight loss agent. An effective stool bulking effect has generally been found in scientific studies.
Irritable bowel syndrome: Psyllium preparations have been studied for more than 20 years in the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome symptoms. Results of these trials have been conflicting. In some cases, insoluble fiber may worsen the clinical outcome.
Weight loss and obesity: The reviewed study seems to show that psyllium may improve blood sugar and lipid levels, which can be related to obesity in some children.
Psyllium is mainly used as a dietary fibre, which is not absorbed by the small intestine. The purely mechanical action of psyllium mucilage absorbs excess water while stimulating normal bowel elimination. Although its main use has been as a laxative, it is more appropriately termed a true dietary fibre and as such can help reduce the symptoms of both constipation and mild diarrhoea.
